Meet the Breast Aesthetics Team

This site is led and medically reviewed by Tongchun Mao, MD, who performs breast and body contouring surgery here and who is responsible for its medical content. The other three physicians contribute what an assessment of the breast often needs: the centre’s surgical standards and its experience of revision, the assessment and treatment of the skin over the breast, and the dermatologic care of an inflamed fold, a scar that is not settling, or skin left sensitive by an earlier operation.

Tongchun Mao

Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Breast assessment · volume, shape and position as separate findings · breast and body contouring

Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.

On this site his part is the examination that decides which of the four structures is producing the complaint. He records the volume each side carries, the height of the fold on the chest wall, the quality and recoil of the skin, and the position of the nipple-areola complex on the mound, because those four findings lead to four different plans. Where the complaint is position and the skin has lost its recoil, he says that adding volume will not raise the breast and that a lift is the operation being described. Where the complaint is a difference between the sides, he plans it as a combination and states which part of the difference can be corrected and which will be improved rather than matched. Where a family history or a new finding is present, the aesthetic plan waits for imaging and he says so at the first appointment rather than after it.

Clinical focus

  • Assigning a breast complaint to volume, shape, position or the nipple
  • Lift and augmentation planned together where both are needed
  • Asymmetry planned as a combination rather than one correction
  • Reduction for weight and for neck and shoulder symptoms
  • Removal or revision of an implant with the envelope assessed first

The complaint, not the operation you arrived with

Most people arrive with a named operation in mind, and it is often the right one. The assessment is not a negotiation about it. It establishes which structure is producing the complaint and names the option that addresses that structure, which is sometimes smaller than expected, sometimes a combination, and sometimes not an operation at all. That conversation is easier to have before an operation than after one.

Start with the structure, not the operation

An assessment establishes which structure is producing the complaint, what each route would change and leave alone, and what the recovery and follow-up involve. Deciding against an operation is a normal outcome of one.
